Meet Chris Falconer of www.eatingisthehardpart.com , the first ever Steve and Dan's Fresh BC Fruit Ambassador. We started our ambassador program to share our fruit with people who are involved in the community, and Chris is just that. Our Strathcona Market team mentioned that they looked forward to having Chris come to the Market on Saturday's throughout the month of March! We asked Chris some questions to get to know him a little bit better...
Looking at your Instagram page, it is obvious that you are a foodie. Where did your love for food come from?
I think my love of food started with my mom. She was a great baker and always tried new things in the kitchen. After she passed away, I really wanted to understand the food on my plate. So I made it a continual goal to embrace the food I eat. From baking bread to butchering my meat. I want to know where it comes from and how it goes together.
What does your day-to-day typically look like?
As a human resources professional, I typically sit during the day. So I try to keep my evenings and weekends fairly active. Which means lots of yoga, cycling, and gym work, mixed in with my cooking adventures and whatever new thing I’m trying. I’m also currently working on a new podcast to showcase the amazing people in our city who do yoga, so keep an eye out for that. It’s called Open Up and Om.
Apples or pears?
Apples. Hands down.
Ambrosia or Fuji?
Ambrosia. It’s a magical apple with a great combination of sweetness and low acidity. Did you know that Ambrosia in Greek and Roman mythology means food of the gods. You can’t go wrong!
What is your favourite dish to make with our fruit?
Fruit salad. I know it sounds simple but it’s so delicious and you get to enjoy the fruit in all of its glory. I’ve also realized that a beautiful fruit salad is the perfect dessert for my cooking adventures which often produce rather luxurious (aka fatty) meals. Next time you dice up some fruit, add lemon/lime zest along with the juice, a splash of cointreau, and a capful of vanilla. So good!
You are taking a 200 500 hr Yoga Teacher Training, what inspired you to do this?
Yoga has been a part of my life for over a decade and becoming a teacher felt like the perfect natural progression. I love filling people with inspiration and as I deepened my own practice, I realized there were some beautiful connections to be made between human resources and yoga. We could all use a few reminders every day to be present and be mindful. Stand in a place and know you are there.
Where is your favorite coffee shop in Edmonton and why?
Oh coffee, one of my favourite things! Transcend is my go to spot. I’ve been buying coffee and coffee related items at the main Argyll location since they opened. I love their dedication to the craft! I can’t wait to see the new Ritchie location.
Favorite dinner spot in Edmonton?
This one has to be sushi related. At face value, it's one of the world's simplest foods, but once you come to appreciate the different subtleties of fish (and get over the deep fried mayo rolls), you come to a magical place. If you’re like me, and you like classic sushi (nigiri and sashimi), then you’ll probably love Sushi Wasabi. Try their Chirashi-don. It’s a great bowl!
If you could only eat one fruit for the rest of your life, what would it be and why?
Grapes. As much as I want to say apples, I’ve become the hugest fan of grapes in the last few years. Maybe it was a few trips to Southern California before it stuck, but discovering and tasting the huge number of grape varietals, really opened my eyes to the seemingly endless number of grapes!!
